New Studies on Viagra (Sildenafil citrate)

Viagra is a drug used to treat male erectile dysfunction.  Also known as Sildenafil citrate or Revatio, its primary competitors on the market are tadalafil (Cialis), and vardenafil (Levitra).

As with all medications, proper dosage should be determined by a doctor. The normal dose of Viagra (sildenafil) is 25mg to 100mg taken once per day between 30 minutes and 4 hours prior to sexual intercourse. Generally, a recommended starting dosage is 50mg and then adjusted based on the patients results. Viagra is sold I three dosages – 25, 50 or 100mg.  Viagra pills are blue and diamond shaped. The word Pfizer is written on one side, with VGR xx (where xx is the dosage) on the other side.

Among Viagra’s side effects are rare cases of  priapism, severe hypotension, myocardial infarction, ventricular arrhythmias, stroke and increased intraocular pressure. More common side effects include headache, prolonged erections, photophobia, sneezing, palpitations, and dyspepsia. Some sildenafil patients have complained of loss of peripheral vision or blurriness.
